    Beware! Zombies Ahead!!!
Hackers Crack Into Texas Road Sign, Warn of Zombies Ahead

    Thursday, January 29, 2009
    By Joshua Rhett Miller

Texas Dept. of Transportation officials confirm a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street in Austin was hacked into last week.

Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, "Zombies Ahead."
Chris Lippincott, director of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation, confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during the early hours of Jan. 19.

"It was clever, kind of cute, but not what it was intended for," said Lippincott, who saw the sign during his morning commute. "Those signs are deployed for a reason — to improve traffic conditions, let folks know there's a road closure." "It's sort of amusing, but not at all helpful," he told FOXNews.com.

    • Click here to visit FOXNews.com's Cybersecurity Center. • Got tech questions? Ask our experts at FoxNews.com's Tech Q&A. Tampering with portable road signs is illegal and potentially dangerous to drivers. It is a misdemeanor in Texas, with penalties ranging from fines to potential jail time.

Lippincott said the hacked sign — manufactured by IMAGO — is owned and operated by the city of Austin. Texas Department of Transportation signs have not been affected, he said. "It is always possible that it could occur, but we attempt to prevent hacking incidents," Lippincott wrote in an e-mail. He declined to comment on security measures to protect the state's signs from hackers.

Austin Public Works spokeswoman Sara Hartley said the incident was not initially reported to police, but will be shortly. The sign was reverted back to its original message within hours, according to Hartley, who insisted the signs are tamper-resistant and equipped with external locks.

"This sign was broken into, it was not just a 'walk up and change the sign' kind of thing," Hartley told FOXNews.com. "This is a new one for us, we've never had it happen before."

She said she did not know whether any other signs in the area had been altered.

According to the blog i-hacked.com, some commercial road signs, including those manufactured by IMAGO's ADDCO division, can be easily altered because their instrument panels are frequently left unlocked and their default passwords are not changed.
"Programming is as simple as scrolling down the menu selection," i-hacked.com reports. "Type whatever you want to display …
In all likelihood, the crew will not have changed [the password]." I-hacked.com warns readers not to try to alter the signs, which cost roughly $15,000.

ADDCO Chief Operating Officer Brian Nicholson told FOXNews.com that the company is sending out notices to customers on the potentially dangerous security flaw.

"It's incumbent upon users to change the default password and secure the sign with a padlock," Nicholson said. "We're having our engineers review this information."

In the meantime, if you're driving in Austin, you can rest assured: There are no zombies ahead.

Zombies on Ice in Chicago - 12/14/08

    Zombies... On Ice!

So, you're off from school, work is boring, or you can't stand the throngs of rude people in the frenzy of Holiday Shopping.

You want to get out and DO something....but what?  Well, here it is.

December 14th (tentative) at 2:30 (again, tentative) in the afternoon, Kitty will be holding the first Zombies on Ice event at Millennium Park in downtown Chicago!

Kitty has teamed up with Chicago Zombie and others to be named soon to bring you this fun and festive event.

Now, here is the kicker... we are going to try for the Guinness Book of World Records for most zombies ice skating at one time!

There will be swag, pictures, video, and of course, lots and LOTS of zombies!

And don't forget to look for updates on http://www.chicagozombie.com

We have a Facebook event page set up at this link: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=38663817131

**Wondering who this Kitty is? Well, Kitty can't talk, so I will tell you a bit about him. Kitty is a shock trooper of Zombie Army Productions. He can not talk, but makes a lot of noise! Don't let him get too close... you never know WHAT he may do. The mind of a puppy in the body of a reanimated killer... he is quite the work, be sure!

A favorite in the haunted house circuit, he's sure to win your heart, too. Check him out at http://www.myspace.com/officialkittyzombie

    HauntedIllinois.com Update 07/12/08

HAUNTED ATTRACTION DIRECTORY OPEN FOR 2008 SUBMISSIONS!

The staff of Haunted Illinois just wanted to remind you that Halloween is right around the corner and now is the time to start promoting your event!  Why the big push to promote your event now?  Two words… web traffic.  In the past month, Haunted Illinois’ traffic has increased significantly, and it will skyrocket as Halloween approaches.  This means that people are really gearing up for the holiday, looking online for information about Halloween-related events.  Think of Haunted Illinois as an online billboard.  If event listings are posted earlier, more people will see them.

Also keep in mind that as it gets closer to October, our event directory is the most visited page on the entire website.   Let our prominent web presence work for you!  Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to get your name out there and let people know about your worthwhile Halloween-related event.

Haunted Illinois is the most comprehensive and up-to-date Illinois Haunted Attraction Directory on the internet.  To eliminate the possibility of listing old information, every season we reset the directory to zero events and start from scratch.  We don’t let the listings roll over from year to year.  If you see it on HauntedIllinois.com, you can rest assured that the information is current.

In fact, we just recently reset the event database.  What does that mean?  It means if you had listed with us in the past, you will need to resubmit your event information for 2008.  Our Halloween Event Directory is starting to fill up nicely and we want to make sure that you to get in on the ground floor.  To view more information about the events already in our directory, visit the following link:

    http://www.hauntedillinois.com/eventlisting.php

Keep in mind that Haunted Illinois lists more than just Haunted Houses.  Any Halloween-related event, as long as it is in Illinois, is welcome in our directory.  If you run a Haunted House, Hayride, Haunted Trail, Home Haunt, Yard Display, Festival, Pumpkin Farm, Apple Orchard or other Halloween-related event, it can be listed in our directory!

For the past several years, Creatures Crypt has been known as one of Illinois’ top Haunted Attractions.  In fact, in 2007 it was voted the number 1 Haunted House in Illinois by HauntedIllinois.com.  Their creativity, detailed sets & props made them one of the best events in the business.

Sadly, 2007 was their last year, but you still have the opportunity to see this attraction one last time... and even take a part of it home with you!  On June 10th, the owners of Creatures Crypt will be holding a Haunted House Auction in Bloomington, Illinois.  The entire attraction must go.  They will be auctioning off complete sets and scenes, as well as hundreds of individual items.

Haunted Illinois has created an information page about the auction which has auction details, a link to the official 8 page auction flyer and more than 50 pictures of props & scenes that will be up for bid!!!  To find out more about the auction, click on the banner below:
